Last days of Summer! How to Roast a Marshmallow

Growing up in Canada, I took for granted how amazing it is to have a  campfire and roast marshmallows during the summer.  Despite living in England for 10 years, it never explicitly occurred to me that other children wouldn’t have this experience.

fire1To celebrate the end of what has been a great summer I thought we’d have an urban campfire in our backyard this weekend with the kids, complete with hot dogs and marshmallows over the fire.

IMG_2173Despite the raging heat of the last few days, we struck the match and went for it!  For those of you who may not know, the best place to roast a marshmallow is in the white hot heat, not the flames.  Avoid the burn and go for the easy roast – just be sure to pull out before your treat suddenly goes up in flames!

COOKING TIPS: Find a ‘green’ stick so it doesn’t burn too fast. Alternatively, use a wire coat hanger from the dry cleaners.  We used an awesome bamboo stick with wood inserts that we paid too much for, from the provincial campground we stayed at this summer.

This one is just right!marsh1
